8 podcasts to inspire and entertain

Podcasts are a fabulous thing. As diverse as music, as amusing as live comedy and as insightful as binge-watching episodes of QI, there’s going to be a podcast out there for you… somewhere. (Tech radar).

I love a good podcast. They keep me entertained whilst driving, running or doing chores. I pop my fabulous Aldi ear-buds into my ear, and am oblivious to my children the rest of the world.

I have a few favourites, some that I wait with baited breath for. Some I listen to for educational purposes, others for inspiration, and some just for fun.

Health, medicine and science:

The Health Report: An ABC radio podcast that brings clarity to health and medical issues from social, scientific and political points of view. I love a little bit of inside medical knowledge, and enjoy the snippets of current topics that this podcast gives me. Subscribe here.

Some favourites:

  • Do not resuscitate tatto, the end of over-the-counter codeine
  • folic acid and autism, unnecessary cannulas, early Type 2 diabetes, and cannibis chocolate

All in the mind: is about the brain and behaviour, and the fascinating connections between them.

Off track: is an Australian radio program and podcast all about the great outdoors.

Books and movies:

Chat10Looks3 has a massive ‘cult’, and is presented by Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb. They have a fabulous quick wit, and discuss/recommend great book, movies, TV show, cooking adventures and recipes. I recommend that you start from episode one, and listen to them all! There are a few lives shows in there as well – plenty of laughs, and my ‘books to read’ list has grown exponentially!

Food:

A Plate to Call Home – because, Gary Mehigan. If I cannot watch him on MasterChef, I am more than happy to listen to and be wooed by, his dulcet tones.

I have only recently discovered this gem – so only have a few to recommend:

  • Nigella Lawson & how to live a good life
  • Curtis Stone and keeping it simple
  • George Calombaris & an honest reflection
General:

Conversations: Richard Fidler chats to some fabulously interesting people about their lives, accomplishments and stories.

A couple of my favourites include:

  • Mortifying Tales: Parts 1 and 2
  • The mission of a flying midwife
  • From combat wounds, to shark attacks, to human error: a life in emergency medicine
  • The call of the road: How one woman took on the trucking world
  • The bond between two alpine climbers which nearly killed them
